Why Charlevoix needs it

In Charlevoix, without a car = not great.
We’re changing that.

Public transit is limited in the region. No metro, few buses, no shared vehicle fleet. If you don’t have your own vehicle, you depend on someone else and your travel is limited across the area. And if you do have one, it may often be sitting in the driveway while your neighbour is looking for a solution.

LocoMotion connects vehicle owners with those who need them. Simply, locally, between people you trust. We make better use of the cars already in the area, so we end up buying fewer of them.

The committee’s story

It all started with a conversation

in Baie-Saint-Paul.

Local people, building something for their own community. Here’s how LocoMotion Charlevoix grew from a conversation into a project that’s getting people talking across the region.

December 2024

People from here decide to do something

A small group of engaged citizens — from the environment and health sectors — meets in Baie-Saint-Paul. The conclusion is simple: the region is sorely lacking mobility solutions. They decide not to just talk about it.

Winter 2025

The project takes shape, partners come on board

The committee puts together a plan and builds ties with key partners: Développement social intégré de Charlevoix, the MRC, the Service d’aide aux nouveaux arrivants, and the Charlevoix Biosphere Region. After comparing several platforms, LocoMotion stands out: simple, affordable, and truly community-based.

March 2025

The survey reveals: the interest is there, and it’s strong

More than 75 people respond — from Baie-Saint-Paul to Les Éboulements, via Saint-Urbain. Lenders, borrowers, volunteers. The respondents’ map shows neighbours who could already help each other out without even knowing it. The community exists. All that was left was to give it a tool.

What's next

Two phases, one vision

  1. Pilot phase — Baie-Saint-Paul. Platform launch in the city, with the core group of members and volunteers already mobilized. The local community is excited; so is the media coverage.
  2. Expansion — Charlevoix and Charlevoix-Est. Once the model is proven in Baie-Saint-Paul, LocoMotion will expand across the entire region. A social innovation funding request has already been submitted to support this rollout.
