Mission

Facilitate active and shared mobility offer in Quebec.

neighborhood mobility

Vision

A society with fewer cars and stronger social ties.

One day, someone lent their car to a local person for a move.
Another brought out their bike trailer to help transport shared tools.
It was simple. Spontaneous. And it changed everything.

We thought: what if we built this everywhere in Quebec?
Living environments where we share more, and decide together.
Vibrant communities, where people get involved, trust each other, and take care of what they build together.

LocoMotion dreams of friendly and peaceful places, where moving differently becomes a real option.
Places where space usage is rebalanced, where we can free ourselves from solo-driving without cutting ourselves off from the world.
Where resources, journeys, and knowledge circulate, to reduce inequalities and strengthen connections.

What we are building together is a network that dreams, acts, and learns as it goes.
Wherever there are people ready to share, LocoMotion can come to life.

Values

Common

LocoMotion is a Common. We share more, we decide together. The rules and tools are designed so that each community can reclaim mobility, in its own way. This project belongs to us collectively, and everyone contributes according to their means. A Common is a shared resource, managed and developed by and for communities.

Trust and solidarity

Sharing a vehicle creates connections. LocoMotion helps people get to know each other, build trust, and support one another. That's how resilient, welcoming, human communities form. Relationships, not just tools, keep a project last over time.

Field experimentation

To learn, we must move together. We can't stay parked. We test, improve and try again. This is how we progress: by acting here and now, with what we have. Each attempt nourishes the network and drives collective change.

Socio-ecological Transition

LocoMotion is part of the socio-ecological transition. We take concrete action on mobility, always alongside other organizations, complementary projects, and public authorities. Because no one changes a society alone.

Our story

The LocoMotion adventure began in 2018 in La Petite-Patrie in Montreal, with a citizen group supported by Solon. The following year, we launched the LocoMotion’s original formula: the now-classic sharing of car, bike, and bike trailer. In fall 2019, a second committee of enthusiasts took the wheel of LocoMotion in Sherbrooke, closely followed that winter by the people of the Ahuntsic neighbourhood in Montreal.

In 2020, thanks to Desjardins, we turned the not-so-thrilling Google Calendar into a wild Sharing highway: www.locomotion.app. And guess what? The Sharing even extended to its code! Our web platform’s open-source code became the starting point for the Coloc’Auto sharing project in France.

Spring 2022, another enthusiastic committee launched LocoMotion in the Plateau Mont-Royal. Not long after, the LocoMotion team announced its support program! The LocoFolie now reaches Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, Rosemont-Est, Sud-Ouest, Verdun, Ville-Marie and Villeray—Saint-Michel—Parc-Extension (VSP).

In 2024, with the help of the Coopérative de développement régional du Québec (CDRQ), LocoMotion becomes an independent non-profit organization. Ready for the road toward a city with fewer cars and more mutual support? Join us!
